Photo Rejuvenation

Pigmentation Removal

Sunspots, liver spots, freckles, and other unwanted pigmentation are often associated with skin aging and over-exposure to the sun or sunbeds. From the age of about 40, the skin is less able to regenerate from sun exposure and age spots start to appear. Generally, these age spots pose no health risk, however, they can be unsightly and create a patchy, less youthful appearance. Freckling and age spots are successfully lightened or removed with Laser or Intense Pulse Light.

Not all pigmentation concerns are a result of sun exposure and some people are born with pigmented birthmarks or may have melasma, a skin pigmentation condition often associated with pregnancy or hormones. Birthmarks can often be treated with a Q-Switch Laser. IPL or Intense Pulse Light skin rejuvenation and pigment removal treatment is a relatively quick and easy procedure. Age spots and freckles can be lightened or removed in as little as one to three treatment sessions. The light targets areas of excess pigment safely breaking down the excess melanin. The sunspots or freckles darken in the first few days after treatment and then the excess melanin sheds naturally away.

How do IPL Skin Rejuvenation treatments work?

The advanced IPL Skin Rejuvenation technology at our Skin n Tonic clinic directs well-controlled pulses of light into the upper skin layer. We also now offer an advanced skin rejuvenation treatment called the illumiFacial which combines the benefits of laser with a fruit acid peel!

This light is absorbed by two of the body’s own natural chemicals – melanin in the pigmented areas and hemoglobin in the red blood cells. The light is carefully controlled to produce the correct pulse length and the right amount of energy to destroy the targets without damaging surrounding tissue.

A younger fresher will emerge after just one IPL session, although we usually recommend a course of treatments to maximize results.

This minimally invasive skin procedure can also treat signs of aging such as wrinkles or age spots. There’s very little recovery time and few side effects, making it a popular skin treatment.

How is a ipl / photorejuvenation procedure performed?

Photorejuvenation uses a unique technique known as pulsed light therapy to treat skin blemishes. Essentially, this technology shines a bright, intense light on various parts of the skin. You will wear an eye mask to protect your eyes from the light, and your doctor will use a piece of equipment called an IPL device, which includes an apparatus with a glass or laser surface. This apparatus is pressed to the problematic areas of the body, emitting a light that heats up collagen beneath the skin, encouraging the body to produce more of this beneficial protein. Enhanced collagen production can fill in fine lines or wrinkles on the face as well as some shallow acne scars. IPL technology also reduces flushing and discoloration on the skin.

Your plastic surgeon may also recommend complementary treatments to help you achieve your goal. Sometimes the use of laser skin resurfacing or a chemical peel in conjunction with photorejuvenation will provide the best result.

IPL emits a broad range of light waves and can diffuse redness, capillaries, brown spots, discoloration and remove hair.

What does IPL or photorejuvenation feel like?

Photorejuvenation may cause mild discomfort. Many patients liken the feeling to a rubber band being snapped against the skin.
