Causes and Treatment of Acne

What is Acne?

Acne is not an easy condition to live with, especially when it affects the face and causes redness and scarring. We know that having smooth, clear skin is desirable for everyone and we want to help as many people as possible to achieve confidence and be able to ditch the makeup or cover ups. Acne can become active and inactive throughout a person’s life, especially during the teenage years of puberty. This can depend on hormones, diet and many other factors – some people find it comes and goes whereas others live with their acne almost permanently.

In fact, around 80% of people suffer with some form of upsetting skin condition. In most cases, acne can leave behind visible and even permanent scarring. It occurs when follicles are clogged with dead skin cells and oil from the skin and is often characterised by whiteheads, pimples, oily skin, blackheads with the possibility of permanent scarring.

Acne FAQ’s

What does Acne look like?

Acne can manifest in many different ways, depending on the individual. If you suffer with acne, you may find that you have one type of spot listed below, or that your skin has multiple spots at any given time. Acne appears in many forms, Whiteheads, Blackheads, Papules, Pustules, Nodules and Cysts, but none are directly harmful to your health.

  • Cysts. This is the most severe type of spot caused by acne. Cysts are large pus-filled lumps that look similar to boils and carry the greatest risk of causing permanent scarring.
  • Blackheads. These are distinguished as small black or yellowish bumps that develop on the skin. People often think they are black as they’re filled with dirt – however, this is not the case, it is because the inner lining of the hair follicle produces pigment which gives them a darker colour.
  • Whiteheads. As the name suggests, these types of spot have a similar appearance to blackheads, however, they may be firmer and won’t empty when squeezed.
  • Papules. These are small red bumps that may feel tender or sore to touch.
  • Pustules. This type of spot has a white tip in the centre, which is called by pus.
  • Nodules. These are those large, hard lumps beneath the surface of the skin. They can be painful and won’t squeeze.

Why do we get Acne ?

Acne commonly starts appearing during puberty and, for the majority, it usually disappears by a person’s late twenties. However, in some cases, it can persist for much longer or start much later in life. Women are more likely than men to have mild to moderate acne into their 30s and beyond and this can be due to hormones.  If your skin tends to be oily, you may be more prone to have this condition. It can also be hereditary – if both your parents had acne it is more likely that you too will develop this condition at some stage in your life. Other factors may include:

  • Greasy cosmetics
  • Stress Menstruation
  • Pregnancy
  • Smoking Lack of good nutrition
  • Genetics
  • Some medications that contain androgen and lithium
