What is cellulite?
Cellulite is such a common complaint with women across the world, no matter their size or body type. Cellulite can cause huge issues with body confidence, and it is almost impossible to get rid of through diet and exercise alone which can be incredibly frustrating. Even some of the most toned, fit and healthy people suffer with the problem of cellulite and wish desperately to be free of it.
Cellulite is the collection or herniation of subcutaneous fat underneath the surface of the skin. This fat then manifests as skin dimpling and nodularity, typically upon the legs, pelvic region, thighs, abdomen, arms, hips, buttocks and knees. Many people refer to cellulite as having the appearance of either orange peel or cottage cheese, neither of which are complimentary terms.
It is a myth that cellulite is caused by toxins in the body. Whilst having a healthy diet and taking part in exercise is great for your health and for your body, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will be cellulite free. Often people who eat more healthily, avoid smoking and drinking might notice less cellulite than others, but even the most healthy individuals can still have cellulite as it is not directly linked to diet or toxins in the body. Non- invasive procedures really do work for the treatment of cellulite, and whilst they are not permanent, they are very effective in the short term and can be used as ongoing treatments to target cellulite.
Why do women get cellulite?
While men can get cellulite too, women tend to get more as they carry more fat around their hips and thighs. Women also have less supportive connective tissue to keep fat all in place which is when the bulging of the fat known as cellulite occurs. It is actually a very common cosmetic condition, in fact, nearly 90% of women will suffer with cellulite at some point during their lives. Even some of the most toned, fit and healthy women suffer with the problem of cellulite and wish desperately to be free of it.
Does cellulite get worse with age?
Yes. Cellulite does get worse with age and this is largely down to the fact that as women get older we produce less estrogen. Estrogen is a hormone responsible for keeping blood vessels flowing smoothly, so, when there is less in the body it can lead to poor circulation, less collagen production and the breakdown of connective tissue. All of this combined together can increase the lumpy fat under the surface of the skin and result in more visible cellulite. This does not necessarily relate to weight gain or losing tone – it is often an unavoidable issue.

3D Shock wave for cellulite
Thankfully, 3D Shockwave is finally here to help you say goodbye to those puckered, unattractive cellulite marks for good. This treatment is powerful, effective and really works to visibly reduce Cellulite on the body whilst also increasing firmness and lifting the skin. The treatment can be used as a stand alone treatment or, as part of an ongoing fat reduction programme with us to accelerate your results.
90% of women who took part in a clinical trial would recommend this treatment for the outstanding results and inch loss it can deliver. When teamed up with other fat reduction treatments such as Cryolipolosis, which we also offer here at our Edinburgh clinic, then clients can expect to see staggering improvements to their body size and tone and reduction of cellulite. A study done on the effectiveness of the combination of Cryolipolysis with 3D Shockwave treatment to reduce cellulite and inch loss speaks for itself. Have a read by clicking here.
3D Shockwave is an affordable addition to our fat reduction treatment range here at Skin n Tonic Aesthetics, and is designed to not only offer a powerful standalone service in the fight against stubborn cellulite and leg treatments, but to also be an accelerator for both the fat removal and the skin tightening services that we offer here too.
The treatment involves placing probes on the areas of the cellulite which then emit radial waves known as shockwaves. The shockwaves then work to disrupt the fat cells and break down the sclerotic fibrous tissue. This tissue is what is responsible for much of the uneven and dimpled appearance of cellulite. A further way it works is by firming the skin by increasing the collagen production and encouraging lymphatic drainage. So, more fatty acids are flushed away, improving the skin’s appearance. 3D Shockwave treatment can be used on the thighs, buttocks, abdomen, arms, hips and knees. You can use this treatment as part of a fat reduction programme or as a standalone treatment, both delivering visible and outstanding results. 3D Shockwave treatment is powerful enough to reduce the appearance of even the toughest cellulite, lifting and firming the skin.
Cavitation for cellulite
Cavitation, also known as ”Inch Loss”, is a non-surgical alternative to eliminating fat cells from the body through the use of ultrasound technology. The ultrasound waves destroy the fat cells by applying pressure to them without harming any other cells in your body. The fat cells cannot withstand this pressure and break down and turn to liquid. The fatty liquid then leaves the body naturally through the liver, leaving you with visible weight loss and less cellulite.
Cavitation isn’t painful, with patients experiencing only a slight warm feeling which is entirely tolerable and subsides at the end of the treatment. The treatment can be used for the thighs and buttocks, abdomen, flanks and arms. It is recommended that you have 6-8 treatments at weekly intervals to obtain the best possible results.
PPC Injections for cellulite
The practice of injection lipolysis for spot reduction of small areas of fat deposits is growing more popular. It is done to dissolve the subcutaneous fat. It is a means of non-invasive body contouring.
Phosphatidylcholine, deoxycholic acid & benzylalcohol is injected into the subcutaneous fatty tissue using a needle. The solution weakens the membrane of the cells which leads to the release of natural enzymes. This process dissolves the fat into acids which are carried by the blood to the liver, which are eventually discarded by the body naturally. This treatment has proven to be very effective in the treatment of Cellulite.
Radio Frequency for cellulite
Radio Frequency can also be a great way to eliminate cellulite. It is a safe and non-invasive treatment designed to tighten the skin on the face and body. This makes it the perfect remedy for those looking to improve the appearance of cellulite by smoothing the skin.
One of our highly experienced practitioners will carry out the procedure by gliding a hand-held device across the treatment area. Then, ultrasound technology from the device is used to penetrate the epidermis of the skin. It heats it up to approximately 45 degrees, which causes the collagen fibres in the skin to contract, and also to produce new collagen and elastin. This process causes the skin to automatically tighten, resulting in a firmer appearance. This treatment can also be used on the face to help fight signs of ageing, but when used for cellulite it is very effective for treating the abdomen, thighs, upper arms and back. It is usually recommended that you allow 30-60 minutes for the full treatment time.
You will usually notice visible results after just one treatment. However, a course of 6-8 treatments (one per week) is recommended for the best results. After this, a further treatment every 4-6 weeks is recommended to maintain the results and keep your skin looking smooth, toned and youthful.
People can respond differently to the treatment depending on their skin type. While most can return to their day to day activities immediately, some can experience some sensitivity. However, if you follow the safety and aftercare instructions, you can expect the maximum results. Water packs and light moisturiser can be applied to the treatment area to treat any blisters, redness and discomfort. SPF is also recommended to be worn daily after the treatment to protect the skin. Also, you must remember to drink plenty of water, around 2 litres a day, to ensure the skin stays hydrated, and avoid consuming any caffeine or alcohol directly after the treatment.

3D SHOCKWAVE – CELLULITE REDUCTION
How does 3D Shockwave work?
3D Shockwave works by stimulating fat breakdown, lymphatic drainage and collagen synthesis. Shockwave was originally used medically to breakdown and release kidney stones and to help ease joint pain. Amazingly, patients receiving treatment for pain also noticed that when they had the treatment around their hip joints then they saw noticeable inch loss as well as visibly reduced cellulite. This is when shockwave began to be used to treat unwanted cellulite on the body.
The treatment is completely pain free and involves placing probes on the areas of the cellulite which then emit radial waves known as shockwaves.
What areas of the body can be treated?
3D Shockwave treatment can be used on:
- The thighs
- Buttocks
- Abdomen
- Arms
- Hips
- Knees
You can use this treatment as part of a fat reduction programme or as a standalone treatment, both delivering visible and outstanding results. 3D Shockwave treatment is powerful enough to reduce the appearance of even the toughest cellulite, lifting and firming the skin.
Cellulite Treatment Results
3D Shockwave is able to deliver visible results by firming and tightening skin whilst dramatically reducing cellulite and improving skin’s texture. Clients begin to notice improvements in their skin texture and elasticity after 3-4 sessions, though optimum results will be visible 1 month after your final treatment
3D Shockwave FAQ’s
Is 3D Shockwave safe?
3D Shockwave is used worldwide and is a completely safe procedure. It was first used medically to ease hip and joint pain and to break down kidney stones.
What can I expect when I have my treatment?
Prior to treatment you will be invited for a personal consultation with a practitioner where you can discuss your concerns and what you are hoping to achieve from treatment with one of our experts. During treatment, probes will be placed on your skin in the area of the unwanted cellulite. The shockwaves are then emitted to the skin, causing fat cells to break down and be eliminated from the body.
How many treatments will I need?
You should begin to notice after 3 to 4 sessions. However, optimum results should be visible after one month, with 8-10 treatments recommended for longer-lasting results.
What happens after treatment?
After treatment clients are able to return to their day to day activities immediately. This treatment is completely non-invasive. This means there are no needles or penetration to the skin and you will experience no pain or discomfort during your treatment.
At Skin n Tonic Aesthetics our Clinical Team consists of experienced, leading professionals in the aesthetics field.
